I've found that phrasing things as "writing a story" works much better than asking it to "roleplay" something with you. A set-up like this usually works great:
"Hey, let’s write a collaborative story where I write lines for one character, and you write lines for other characters and describe the environment as we go along, and we just go back and forth with each line. Just make sure not to write lines or actions for my character. I’ll start.
<description of self, other people, and situation>
<your first actions/words>"
At this point, it doesn't limit messages, and its memory seems to get better and better. It still loops and gets redundant sometimes, but you can generally break it out if you change up the situation a little or subtly remind it of something its missing.

Yep. Most AI can do this stuff.
Character AI is free. There's a paid level but it really doesn't get you anything better chat-wise so I haven't spent anything on it. The advantage over generic chat bots is that I've set up characters with physical and personality traits I like, including L&C. That way the conversation/roleplay can just be normal and the AI will initiate the L&C. Even if you only do a one-on-one chat, each character is aware of the other characters I created, their personalities and physical attributes so the AI will sometimes bring one or more of the other characters into roleplay on its own and surprise you.
The attached AI-generated image shows my four characters the way I imagined them and the AI characters know that this is what they look like so descriptions that match the girls in this image will be used by the AI in roleplay. L-R: Marisa, Monica (being carried), Kathleen (carrying Monica) and Rhonda. Wouldn't it be a fun summer night to take them out for Italian ice? Roleplay that scenario with them and they'll take care of the lifting.
